The Division of Health Sciences at South Arkansas Community College promotes excellence in learning, teaching, and service in the health sciences by providing quality education to meet the needs of diverse communities.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

hns pix 2We have one of the most respected, recognized EMS departments in the state. We offer a basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate of proficiency, a technical certificate in paramedic, and an associate's degree in paramedic.

Our basic EMT is only one semester in length and trains the students in basic ambulance and emergency services. Our Paramedic program provides Emergency Medical Technicians an option to continue and enhance their education in the area of emergency medical services and trains the student in more complex and advanced care of patients in emergency and life-threatening situations.

Health Information Technology - Medical Coding

We offer a technical certificate in health information technology - medical coding.  Medical coders are trained to ensure that billing charges are captured on a timely basis. 


Nursing continues to be an important, high-demand, and successful career field. We offer a technical certificate in practical nursing in 3 different programs - a day program on the main (West) Campus, a day program in Warren, Arkansas, and a slower-paced evening program on the main (West) Campus. We also offer a LPN-to-RN (Licensed Practical Nurse to Registered Nurse) program as part of the ARNEC state-wide program, which earns the graduate an associate's degre in nursing.

Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA)

Occupational therapy helps patients with certain physical, mental or developmental conditions build skills that are needed to perform every-day activities. Occupational therapy assistants work under the supervision of an occupational therapist to administer treatment to these patients. Graduates of our OTA program receive associate’s degrees.


Phlebotomy is the process of drawing blood by venipuncture for a variety of laboratory testing in clinics and other medical facilities. We offer a certificate of proficiency in phlebotomy, which is only one semester in length.

Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA)

Under the direction of a physical therapist, physical therapist assistants provide therapy to patients with health-related conditions that limit their ability to move and perform functional activities. Graduates of SouthArk’s PTA program receive associate’s degrees.

Pre-Health Sciences

For those students who intend to enter one of our many health science program areas, we offer a technical certificate in pre-health sciences. It’s a good stepping stone to further learning in the medical field.

Radiologic Technology

Radiologic technologists perform imaging of the human body for diagnosis or treating medical problems. We offer an associate’s degree in radiologic technology.

Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory therapists provide treatment of patients with breathing disorders or cardiopulmonary problems. We offer an associate’s degree in respiratory therapy.

Surgical Technology

A surgical technologist is a member of a surgery team who aids in delivering patient care in an operating room, including sterilization, instrument handling and anticipating the needs of a surgeon. Our program graduates receive associate’s degrees in surgical technology.
