Overview

emtAt SouthArk, two levels of certificate training are provided in emergency medical technology. In addition, an associate of applied science degree option is available.

EMT
This 155-clock-hour course is designed to prepare students for EMT certification examination administered by the Arkansas Department of Health. The course includes CPR, anatomy, dealing with trauma, splinting, use of spine boards, bandaging, emergency care of patients and other approved equipment. Upon completion, the student is awarded a certificate of proficiency.

Paramedic
This program consists of three semesters of concentrated study including classroom, hospital clinical experiences, and field internship rotations with an advanced life support ambulance service.

Paramedic is the highest classification of emergency medical services professionals in Arkansas. Paramedics play a role beyond standard EMTs, administering emergency care using invasive techniques through standing orders, and assisting in various basic settings such as emergency rooms or intensive-care units.

The SouthArk program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, 1361 Park Street in Clearwater, FL 33756, (727) 210-2350.

Students who successfully complete the three semesters of paramedic courses will be awarded a technical certificate. Those who also complete the additional 30-hour general education requirement will earn an associate of applied science degree.
