Press Release:

Committee Formed for Jodie Mahony Endowed Scholarship at South Arkansas Community College

El Dorado, AR (April 2, 2007) - Charles Thomas, chair of the Jodie Mahony Endowed Scholarship Fund at the South Arkansas Community College Foundation, announced today that the Scholarship Committee has been formed and fund raising has begun.

“We are very honored that Jodie would choose the Foundation to fund an endowed scholarship in his name.  Over the years, he has been a strong advocate for this college.  His commitment to education at all levels has had a tremendous benefit for our community”, said Cynthia Reyna, SouthArk Foundation Executive Director.  Mahony helped legislate SouthArk into existence as Southern Arkansas University - El Dorado Branch in 1975 and later led efforts to forge its merger with the technical college in 1992.  His leadership and efforts laid the foundation on which SouthArk stands today.

Scholarship Committee members represent communities across Jodie’s former senate district and the state:   Calion– Rick Evans; Camden – Allen Roberts; Crossett–– Johnnie Bolin;  El Dorado – Diane & Edwin Alderson, Steve Cameron, Margaret Compton, Venie Craig, Elise Drake, Chris Hegi, Wendell Holden, Sherrel Johnson, Cindy Langston, Johnny Loftin, John Milam, Sharon Modica, Diane & A Pieroni, Mark Smith, Charlie Thomas, Bettye Thurmon;  Hampton – David Wells; Hermitage – Linda Sweeney; Junction City – Preston Rogers, Gene Summers; Little Rock – Joyce Elliott, Mark Hudson, Stacy Pittman, John G. Ragsdale, Georgia Rogers; Magnolia – Dr. Corbet Lamkin; Pine Bluff – Jay Bradford, Ted Drake; Siloam Springs–– Wayne Mays; Smackover – Bobby Newman; Strong – Charles Lovett.

Ex-Officio Committee members are Congressman Mike Ross, State Senator Gene Jeffress, State Representative John Lowery, Union County Judge Bobby Edmonds, Union County Sheriff Ken Jones, El Dorado Mayor Mike Dumas, and members of the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce and Union County Water Conservation Board.

“Without exception,” added Thomas, “those who agreed to serve did so enthusiastically and with a ‘whatever we can do to help’ attitude.  All had personal stories about how Jodie had helped them or their organizations during his 36 years in the legislature.”

The endowed scholarship will cover books, tuition, and fees for students enrolled in Associate of Arts degree programs at SouthArk—programs that provide the first two years of a four-year degree—and will be based on academic achievement.
