South Arkansas Community College will strive to be the leading resource for accessible education, workforce training, partnerships and economic development for our region.

College Mission

South Arkansas Community College promotes excellence in learning, teaching, and service; provides lifelong educational opportunities; and serves as a cultural, intellectual, and economic resource for the community.

College Core Values

The college has identified six values statements that serve as guiding principles in fulfilling the Mission Statement.

1. Excellence in Education
We are committed to providing students access to a highly competent, innovative, and supportive faculty and staff; modern facilities equipped with current technology; and high-quality academic and occupational programs.

2. Student Learning
We are committed to providing support, respect, and encouragement, thereby enabling students to achieve their educational goals and develop skills for lifelong learning.

3. Contribution to the Community
We strive to serve the academic, occupational, and enrichment needs of the community; enhance its quality of life; and support economic development in South Arkansas.

4. Quality of Work Environment
Recognizing that everyone contributes to the learning process, we value each member of our college community; foster respect, trust, and support among faculty, staff, and students; encourage responsible, creative risk-taking and innovation; and recognize and reward exceptional performance and integrity.

Believing that everyone should have an opportunity to learn and succeed, we value intellectual and cultural diversity in the classroom, in the workplace, and in the community.

Process and Participation


March: Survey of community, students, faculty, staff, and SouthArk Board of Trustees
April: Meeting with consultant Ken Hubbell to brainstorm and discuss goals and objectives for the future of SouthArk (Planning Council, deans & directors, cabinet, HLC criteria chairs)
June: Initial strategic initiatives presented at the SouthArk Board of Trustees meeting
July: Planning Council Retreat to define initiatives and brainstorm outcomes based on the notes from the April retreat and proposed strategic initiatives reviewed at the Board of Trustees annual retreat
August: Surveys sent to SouthArk personnel and the SouthArk BoT asking for feedback on the proposed strategic initiatives and proposed Strategic Initiatives voted on and approved in Planning Council; the title Transformational Journey was also approved.
September: SouthArk Board of Trustees Planning Committee met to review and discuss the proposed strategic initiatives, followed by SouthArk Board of Trustees approval of new Strategic Initiatives on September 19, 2017
October: The 2017-2022 Strategic Plan: Transformational Journey was added to the SouthArk website and the WEAVE assessment database.

STRATEGIC INITIATIVE 1
PATHWAYS
Initiative: Foster student success through pathways to completion

Components

I. Strengthen pathways for P-12 students to complete college-level work prior to high school graduation and progress to post-secondary enrollment.

II. Design efficient pathways to certificate and degree completion while guiding students through the process.

III. Grow and strengthen partnerships with other institutions to encourage certificate and degree completion leading to successful transfer.

V. Meet the educational needs of the workforce through quality programs.

Key Performance Indicators

  1. Increase the rate of college certificates and degree completion for SouthArk students.
  2. Increase on-time completion of certificates and degrees.
  3. Expand partnerships with universities through articulation agreements and 2+2 programs.
  4. Increase graduates’ employment readiness.

Why This Initiative?

The SouthArk strategic planning committee analyzed the need for clear and consistent pathways to success model that will map students from start to finish, whether to a certificate, Associate of Applied Science degree, or an Associate of Arts transfer degree. Research has shown that students are best able to maintain momentum and complete their goals if they have a clear path and end in sight. This initiative will strengthen pathways for P-16 students and will strengthen partnerships with transfer institutions and with the workforce.

CONNECTIONS
Initiative: Strengthen connections through communication and partnerships

Components

I. Enhance SouthArk’s identity and articulate SouthArk’s vision among all stakeholders.

II. Develop and strengthen connections through partnerships and communication.

III. Serve as a recognized resource for cultural enrichment activities.}

IV. Develop and employ physical and financial resources for the continuous improvement of the college.

Key Performance Indicators

  1. Increase image perception and recognition in the region.
  2. Increase and expand partnerships with business and industry.
  3. Increase and expand partnerships with P-12 institutions.
  4. Maximize use of technology on campus.

Why This Initiative?

An institution’s strength is derived from its connections with the community, service area, employers, workforce, and partner institutions. SouthArk recognizes the need to maintain strong partnerships and to grow new connections through communication. Included in this initiative is the need to articulate SouthArk’s identity and vision to its partners and to strive for continuous improvement of the college through enhanced connections.

CAMPUS CULTURE
Initiative: Broaden a campus culture of respect and awareness of individual needs, abilities, and potential

Components

I. Promote campus diversity.

II. Develop a campus-wide culture of community service.

  1. Increase offerings through a variety of college events and programs.
  2. Develop campus-wide community service initiatives.
  3. Increase employee participation in internal and external professional development opportunities.
  4. Encourage innovative educational methodology.

Why This Initiative?

SouthArk recognizes that a healthy and thriving campus life is imperative to its existence; therefore, the goal of this initiative is to promote awareness of individual needs, abilities, and potential. Expanding campus diversity among faculty, staff, and students is a focus, as is the expansion of community service among students and SouthArk personnel. This strategic initiative ties closely to connections with the community and also strives to provide a culture of employee excellence.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE
Initiative: Enhance the student experience

Components

I. Engage students on campus through student organizations and activities.

II. Increase student involvement in workforce opportunities.

III. Foster a campus environment that promotes student success.

IV. Increase student engagement in the community.

Key Performance Indicators

  1. Increase student organization and activity participation.
  2. Increase participation of students in internship programs and apprenticeships.
  3. Increase usage of student resources and areas.
  4. Increase student mentorship opportunities.

Why This Initiative?

SouthArk understands that by expanding and enhancing the student experience, students will make connections to the college and to the community, they will have more satisfaction in the campus cultural experience, and they will progress more quickly through their pathways to completion. Included in this initiative is the need to engage students in the on-campus life through increased participation in student events, programs, activities, and clubs. This initiative is not solely focused on the on-campus experience, however, but also on the non-traditional student experiences that make up such a large population of students in today’s community college.
