Radiologic Technology Handbook 

The Radiologic Technology (X-ray) program consists of classroom instruction on campus and clinical instruction in area hospitals and clinics. There are also 4 Online courses integrated throughout the curriculum, which may be completed on or off campus. Students in the program learn to transport and position patients for radiologic examination; to produce and critique images, archive images, and maintain patient records. 

This 24-month program leads to the Associate of Applied Science Degree, and graduates are eligible to take the registry examination for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Employment opportunities for graduates may be found in radiography departments of hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices, and related areas.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Radiologic Technology Program was established to produce qualified, entry-level radiographers for the ever-expanding field of diagnostic imaging. Through classroom, laboratory, and clinical experiences, students acquire professional, ethical, and technical skills required of diagnostic imaging professionals.

Admission to the Radiologic Technology Program is limited to 12 students per year. All applicants to the Radiologic Technology program MUST:

• Complete all basic studies requirements.
• Complete the following prerequisites: RADT 1001, BIOL 2064/L, Math 1023 with a minimum grade of “C.” It is recommended that students complete BIOL 2074/L (Human Anatomy and Physiology II), ENGL 1113 (Composition I), ENGL 1123 (Composition II), PSYC 2003 (General Psychology), and CSCI 1003 (Introduction to Computers), with a C or higher prior to applying to the professional program.
• Must have a GPA of at least a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for all courses applicable to the degree/program. The calculation for each applicant's GPA will include only the completed prerequisite, co-requisite, and general education courses required for the degree/program. 
• Have successfully completed the TEAS exam with acceptable minimum Reading (45) and Composite (55) scores. Additionally, the TEAS will be limited to 4 attempts within the 18 months prior to program application - see program faculty for further information.
• Request, complete, and submit a Radiologic Technology application packet which is only available through Radiologic Technology faculty.
• Upon program acceptance & not until requested
  • provide proof of an unencumbered drug screen ($35) and criminal background check ($80).
  • provide proof of PPD (TB) skin test, IGRA test or evidence of negative chest x-ray if skin testing is not allowed.
  • provide proof of Hepatitis B, Influenza, and Varicella (Chicken Pox) immunization.

Applications may be picked up from January 17, 2024 - March 14, 2024. Applications are due on March 25, 2024.  Applications must be picked up from Mandi Haynes or Kelly Roper. They are located in rooms 178 and 176 in the Health Science Building. When picking up an application, the prospective student MUST bring current transcripts and TEAS scores in order to receive an application. 

Disclosure Statement for Vaccinations, Immunizations, and/or Testing/Screening Required by Clinical, Practicum, Fieldwork and/or Internship/Externship Sites

Students currently in, entering into, or applying for entry into any health science program at South Arkansas College must understand that:

1. Successful completion of the clinical, practicum, fieldwork, and/or internship/externship program component is a requirement for graduation from these programs;
2. Clinical, practicum, fieldwork, and/or internship/externship sites require students to have received certain vaccinations, immunizations, possibly including the Covid-19 vaccination, and to have successfully passed testing/screenings such as a drug screen and a criminal background check, in order to be allowed to attend clinical, etc., in their facility.
   • Some facilities do not allow students to attend clinical, etc., in their facility until after the student has fully completed the Covid-19 vaccination doses recommended by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
3. Therefore, if the student has not received or completed the vaccinations and immunizations, including a complete Covid-19 vaccination (if applicable), and successfully passed testing/screenings that are required by the clinical, practicum, fieldwork, and/or internship/externship site(s) and has not yet successfully completed these required program components, the student will not graduate from the program.
4. Successful graduation from the applicable health science program is required in order to sit for the profession’s licensure, certification, registration, etc., examination.
5. The program graduate will not be able to work in the applicable health science profession if he/she is not licensed, certified, registered, etc., in the profession.

What do Radiologic Technologists do?
Radiologic technologists use ionizing radiation, sound waves, and radio waves to produce images of tissues, organs, bones, and vessels of the body. These images are produced to assist in diagnosing, grading, treatment planning, and monitoring pathology. Radiologic technologists assist radiologists (physicians) in the performance of a variety of radiologic procedures.

Where do Radiologic Technologists work?
Radiologic technologists work in hospitals, physician offices, specialty treatment centers, privately-owned imaging centers, traveling companies, sales, research, and education.

Specialty areas within Radiologic Technology
Radiologic technologists may work performing routine radiography procedures. However, there are many specialty areas within radiologic technology that radiologic technologists may work in with additional education and training. These areas include:

• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
• Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
• Computed Tomography (CT)
