Job Summary:

To qualify for the Simulation Lab Specialist position, the applicant must hold a minimum of an Associate’s degree in the nursing field; hold a current, unencumbered registered nursing (RN) license; and have at least three years of full-time clinical nursing experience. This is a full-time position.  The selected applicant for this position is responsible for planning, coordinating, administering and assessing both high and low fidelity simulation for students in the Health Science Division of South Arkansas Community College. He/she will maintain and operate the simulation lab and should be articulate, team oriented, professional in appearance and demeanor, and display excellent interpersonal skills. He/she will maintain currency within his/her field, including required licensure. Work schedule can vary depending on a number of factors, including, but not limited to simulation/skills laboratory needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Simulation Lab Specialist is responsible for supervising nursing students in the laboratory and clinical setting.                                                                                                           

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Simulation Lab Specialist will:

  • Create, prepare for, and execute realistic simulation scenarios for health science students.
  • Coordinate scheduling of student laboratory use with faculty and oversight of student check offs and skills practice
  • Educate and train faculty and staff in the use of simulation laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain all OSHA standards through implementation, labeling, policies and practices. Keep faculty and students aware of OSHA rules and regulations
  • Keep abreast of current simulation best practices by review of journals, abstracts and other literature in existing and emerging simulation application technologies. This will include attendance at professional development seminars and workshops related to simulation.
  • Procure, install, configure, operate, maintain, and repair (if possible) medical equipment and simulators, computers, and audiovisual equipment for the simulation lab; develop and implement a maintenance plan for the simulators and equipment to include troubleshooting, and standard maintenance.
  • Provide individual instruction as needed when appropriate.
  • Post and maintain office hours.
  • Participate in graduation ceremonies unless excused by the division dean.
  • Attend all faculty, divisional and in-service meetings unless excused by the division dean.
  • Assist in the development of materials for approval/accreditation and the maintenance of such approval/accreditation by the regional accrediting agency and Arkansas State Board of Nursing.
  • Assume active involvement in advisory committees in each area of nursing department where appropriate.
  • Assist with student recruitment, advisement and promote student retention.
  • Communicate efficiently and effectively with South Arkansas Community College faculty and staff.
  • Assist the Nursing Director in coordination of community service events with students such as participation in health fairs, flu clinics, etc.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Travel Requirements:

Local travel may be required for clinical supervision duties. Occasional regional may be necessary for clinical supervision duties.  Occasional national travel will be required for simulation training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Essential Functions for the Simulation Lab Specialist:

  • possesses sound familiarity of current nursing concepts, principles, practices, and skills.
  • possesses adequate computer skills to be able to grade clinical assignments.
  • possesses good communication skills to interact with students, patients, care partners, colleagues, and supervisors.

Required Education and Experience:

The Simulation Lab Specialist:

  • Holds a minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Holds a valid, unencumbered Arkansas Registered Nursing license.
  • Must have at least a minimum of three (3) years of registered nurse experience.

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

The Simulation Lab Specialist:

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is preferred
  • Experience in nursing education and/or nursing simulation.
  • Certified Simulation in Healthcare Educator
  • Work experience in teaching and/or clinical instruction, in a variety of areas.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Arkansas State Board of Nursing.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: physical mobility sufficient for direct supervision of students in lab and clinical settings; have visual ability sufficient for observation and assessment; auditory ability sufficient for monitoring and assessing health needs; and fine and gross motor skills sufficient for providing safe and competent nursing care.  The employee must be able to move around and about their area, and operate a computer as needed.  Some lifting will be expected and he/she must be able to perform expected duties of a nursing instructor in various clinical settings.

The mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: critical thinking, complex problem solving, and judgement to sufficiently instruct students in a practical clinical health care setting and to provide a safe learning environment for students. The employee must demonstrate self-control and stress tolerance. The employee needs to employee flexibility and must demonstrate initiative in collaboratively working with and relating to others.

Work Environment:

Employee will work within a very close physical proximity to others and will interact with others both virtually and face-to-face. Work area includes a moderate level of noise from various sources. Employee will work within environments that cause expose to infectious agents and contagious diseases.
