The SouthArk Re-Opening Task Force continues to meet regularly to review and discuss plans regarding COVID protocols, mask usage guidance, quarantine/isolation procedures, etc.

With the current COVID case count in our area remaining low, masks are optional on our campuses.  Social distancing is encouraged when possible but not recquired.

We need you to continue reporting illness and exposure to COVID-19

  • For STUDENTS:  If you are sick or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, contact Ms. Brandi Cotterman at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.or 870-864-7149
  • For EMPLOYEES:  :  If you are sick or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, contact Ms. Brandi Cotterman at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.or 870-864-7149
  • Guidance from the Arkansas Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that mask use, vaccination, and vaccination boosters allow for reduced instances of required quarantines, and reduced time required in quarantine or isolation if that becomes necessary. Your ability to stay at school or work following exposure to someone who has tested positive will depend on mask use and, in some cases, your vaccination status.

Also, the Task Force continues to review the current quarantine and isolation guidance from the CDC, the Arkansas Department of Health, and the Arkansas Department of Education.   We will have updated guidance on quarantine protocols no later than September 1, 2022.  Stay tuned for that information.

Continue to take care of yourself and others around you, and stay SouthArk Strong!

I am pleased to announce that we will again have federal stimulus funds available for summer 2022 students: $500 for part-time students (1-11 credit hours) and $1,000 for full-time students (12+ credit hours). These funds can be used for any costs you have associated with attending college, including rent, gas, food, childcare, books, or tuition.

Below are a few guidelines for eligibility:

  • You must be enrolled and attending classes this summer. The first round of fund distributions will not begin until instructors verify your attendance, which includes attending in-person classes and logging in and completing assignments in online classes.
  • The distribution of funds will not begin until the week of June 13, with the first round of checks expected to be printed the week of June 20.
  • If you are enrolled as a part-time student for the first and long summer sessions and then enroll in enough courses second summer to move you to full-time status (12+ credit hours), you will receive two rounds of checks at $500 each. Second summer disbursements will not be made until attendance is verified the second week in July.
  • A link to the online form for eligibility is below. If you need funds to be applied to your balance, mark “Apply Funds to Balance” on the form. Then, you will need to contact SouthArk’s Business Office to verify payment arrangements and remaining balances. These funds will not be applied immediately to your SouthArk balance, but this will mark your account for expected funds.
  • If you complete the form but are not enrolled in summer courses, or you are marked for non-attendance by an instructor at the 11th class day, you will not receive funds of any kind.
  • All students enrolled and attending classes this summer, including high school students, will be eligible for funds.

If you have questions, you may contact Ashley Holt, Administrative Analyst (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 870.864.8433).

Arkansas and Louisiana are experiencing a significant surge in COVID-19 cases with Union County and the neighboring parishes in Louisiana exceeding peaks experienced previously during this pandemic. To safeguard in-person learning and to protect the members of the SouthArk family, facemasks are required in all indoor facilities on all SouthArk campuses effective Friday, January 7, 2022.  This requirement applies to all students, employees, and campus visitors, and this decision will be reviewed every thirty days, or more frequently as circumstances demand.

A few things you need to know about our current COVID-19 procedures:

  • Guidance from the Arkansas Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that mask use, vaccination, and vaccination boosters allow for reduced instances of required quarantines, and reduced time required in quarantine or isolation if that becomes necessary.  Your ability to stay at school or work following exposure to someone who has tested positive will depend on mask use and, in some cases, your vaccination status.
  • We need you to continue reporting illness and exposure to COVID-19
    • For STUDENTS:  If you are sick or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, contact Dr. Derek Moore at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 870-875-7262

The SouthArk Re-Opening Task Force met yesterday to discuss the next steps in our ongoing review of appropriate protocols regarding COVID-19.  Based on the low number of new quarantines and isolations on our campuses, hospitalization rates in our region, and recommendation from the task force, the following guidance will take effect immediately:

  • Masks are strongly recommended for all indoor venues at SouthArk, but not required
    • In situations where one-on-one advising, counseling, tutoring, etc. needs to occur in small or confined spaces, employees may request that both individuals wear masks
  • Masks continue to be an important piece of our overall pandemic mitigation strategy, including the fact that if you are wearing a mask and are exposed to a person who is COVID-positive, you may be able to avoid quarantine
  • Some programs (particularly in Health Science) may have ongoing mask requirements, especially at clinical sites, etc.
  • The college will move to a weekly review of our current mask policy, instead of the current monthly review
    • If the COVID situation deteriorates, a return to mandatory masks (and other protocol enhancements) may become necessary
  • If you become ill, test positive for COVID, or are exposed to someone who is COVID-positive, you must report that to the appropriate person:
    • Students:  Contact Dr. Derek Moore, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 870-875-7262
    • Employees:  Contact Ms. Brandi Cotterman, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 870-864-7149

As always, the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our highest priority.  We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust as needed.   Please continue to do your part by washing your hands, social distance when possible, wear your mask when appropriate, and talk with your healthcare provider to discuss what is best for you regarding vaccinations and booster shots.

Stay well, and stay SouthArk Strong!

As you are aware, COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths continue to rise in Arkansas, exceeding peaks experienced previously during this pandemic. To safeguard in-person learning and to protect the members of the SouthArk family, facemasks are required in all indoor facilities on all SouthArk campuses effective Monday, August 16, 2021.  This requirement applies to all students, employees, and campus visitors, and this decision will be reviewed every thirty days, or more frequently as circumstances demand.

The decision to require masks is based on rising case counts, the severity of the Delta variant of the virus, limited hospital capacity, guidance from the CDC and the Arkansas Department of Health, and the overarching need to protect those who come to our campuses.  Also, many of our students and employees have young children and grandchildren who are not old enough to be vaccinated.

I am extremely proud of how all of you reacted and responded to the ever-changing nature of this pandemic last year.  Unfortunately, we find ourselves in the same situation again…and things are likely to continue to change rapidly and in unexpected ways.  Please continue to find safe and effective ways to protect yourself and others.

We will communicate updates and new information as it becomes available.  Let me know if you have any questions about the roll-out of this plan.  And finally, if you are not vaccinated, please consult with your family physician or your pharmacist to learn the latest accurate information about vaccine options.

Stay safe, and stay SouthArk Strong!

V. PHASE 3

SOUTH ARKANSAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW CDC GUIDANCE.  MORE INFORMATION MAY BE FOUND AT:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/

It is always an exciting time of year as we get close to the start of the fall semester.   We’ll have new students and employees on our campuses ready to explore and learn.  And this fall, just like last year, we find ourselves in the midst of a community health crisis.

College administration and the SouthArk Reopening Task Force have been monitoring the pandemic situation over the summer and making adjustments as we move into Phase IV of our plan.  As we did this past year, we will continue to sanitize classrooms and other public spaces, provide masks and hand sanitizers, etc. for all students and employees.

For the fall semester, here are a few things for everyone to consider:

  • If you have questions about vaccinations, mask use, etc., please talk to your family physician, pharmacist, or other professional who is specifically trained in this area.  Please don’t rely on social media, unreliable “news” sources, or other unqualified messengers.  The most important thing is for everyone to make really good, informed decisions about their own health and how they can help reduce the spread of COVID and reduce the risk associated with it in case they test positive for it.
  • Getting vaccinated remains your best option for protection against the virus.  If you haven’t done so already, I strongly encourage you to get fully vaccinated as soon as possible.  If you need additional information about how and why to get vaccinated, the Arkansas Department of Health has many resources on their website
  • There is currently a state law that says that we cannot require masks on our campuses.  Even though we don’t require masks when you are on campus, masks are effective in preventing direct exposure to airborne virus particles.  I strongly encourage you to continue to wear a mask when you are around other people and social distancing is not possible.
  • Communication and contact tracing are still vitally important as we monitor students and employees who may be exposed to COVID.  The rules and guidance related to quarantine and isolation (based on Arkansas Department of Health guidelines) continue to evolve depending on your vaccination status.  If you have been in close contact with someone who has COVID or if you have tested positive, please contact the following people:
    • For SouthArk students, contact Dr. Derek Moore at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 870-875-7262
    • For SouthArk employees, contact Ms. Brandi Cotterman at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 870-864-7149

We are looking forward to a fantastic fall semester with all of you.  We will all have to work hard to take care of one another and have a successful academic year.

  3. Only the student and one companion will be allowed for the appointment.

C. Academic Plan

  1. The college is preparing to offer a return to campus and hold a mixture of both online and face-to-face courses for the 2020-2021 Academic Year. Academics and facilities have reviewed classroom spaces to determine how many students can safely be present in each classroom to maintain CDC guidelines of spacing 6 feet apart. Some face-to-face classes may follow a hybrid model with alternations of on-campus attendance by a portion of the students while the other portion is attending via a virtual method. Other tasks/assignments will be completed on the “hybrid” day. For courses held in overflow rooms, students will have the ability to enter the virtual classroom from a location outside of campus if needed. All students and faculty must adhere to SouthArk’s face covering and social distancing procedures. All spaces will be deep cleaned and sanitized daily. Sanitizing materials will be available in each classroom for disinfecting between courses.
  2. All students will receive information detailing how SouthArk will handle the testing and tracing of COVID-19 cases, as well as and resources they need to be successful and remain as safe as possible during the fall semester.

D. In the Event of a Major Classroom Disruption

  1. All courses/instructors are prepared in the event the college must transition to a virtual mode of learning.
  2. In the event of alternative operations, all full-time faculty will be expected to remain on campus, teaching from their personal office space, classroom, and/or lab. Working from home or teaching remotely will only be allowed in the event of campus closures or under special circumstances with approval from the Vice President for Academics and President.
  3. All courses/instructors are prepared in the event the college must transition to a virtual mode of learning. The plan for each division is as follows:

1.  Workforce and Continuing Education (Workforce Division)

  1. Corporate Education and Apprenticeship classes will be conducted in-person practicing social distancing and utilizing online screening tools and will follow state guidelines for the programs.
  2. C-STOP will continue to hold in-person instruction, utilize the online screening tool for COVID symptoms, and practice social distancing. Specialized training will be conducted via online or in-person instruction at the discretion of the requesting industry.
  3. Community Education courses will be delivered virtually via ZOOM technology.
  4. Adult Education plans to provide instruction when possible via a state-mandated virtual platform, and will schedule in-person classes with minimized attendance, face coverings and socially distanced students.
  5. The ACAP Program will conduct classes utilizing both in-person and virtual instruction and will practice social distancing and face coverings.

2.  General Education (Arts & Sciences Division)

Should alternative operations become necessary, General Education courses will move to an online format with the option of utilizing Blackboard Collaborate for face-to-face meetings. The online course will continue without change or disruption in the online format.

3.  Health Programs (Health Sciences Division)

Theory instruction for all health science programs will move to a virtual delivery model, utilizing Blackboard Collaborate and/or other online learning methods. Determination of the methods used, including whether they will be synchronous or asynchronous, will be determined by each medical program director with approval from the dean. In the event it is necessary to bring students to campus, alternate classrooms and/or alternating student attendance, such as part of class on campus and part virtual, may be utilized to accommodate social distancing. Students attending labs and/or clinical will continue to follow the guidelines already approved by SouthArk.

4. Career and Technical Education (CTE Division) and Secondary Technical Center

  1. Automotive Technology/Welding Technology/Industrial Technology/Process Technology/Culinary
    1. Students enrolled in CTE programs may be able to complete the shop/kitchen safety and academic components of this coursework utilizing the Blackboard platform. Students are still able to gain the practical hands-on demonstration of individual skills proficiencies through an online format. For face-to-face class meetings our classrooms and labs (“shops”, “trainers”, “kitchen”) are large enough to easily follow social distancing requirements. Another possible scenario to accommodate even stricter standards is to split classes with approximately half of the students working in the lab while the other half attains instruction from the classroom / computer labs.
    2. Instructors have developed methods to deliver classwork instruction through an online format, and are working on methods to deliver remote instruction and interaction to students via Blackboard Collaborate and online videos.

E. Early College Program (High School Concurrent and Dual Enrollment)

  1. The staff within Early College Program will operate as normal from their personal offices during the fall semester.
  2. In the event of an alternative class schedule, the Early College Coordinator will work closely with area high schools to develop a plan that suits the college and the school district. These plans could include:
    1. Continued utilization of Blackboard for assignments and final grades.
    2. The use of other remote learning resources for the presentation of any projects or term papers the students have to complete. Students can present these during the normal hours of their morning or evening class times.

F. Computer Labs

  1. All student computer labs will have capacity limitations to ensure proper social distancing is maintained. In certain labs, computers may be assigned on a per-user basis by a staff member and may require prior reservations.
  2. Course enrollment limits have been adjusted for courses taught in computer labs.
  3. Every effort will be made to ensure that computing devices are cleaned with a CDC approved cleaning solution daily. Please do not bring cleaning supplies from home. All approved cleaning supplies will be provided by the college. Using unapproved cleaning solutions on electronic equipment can possibly damage the equipment.
  4. Students must clean their computer station before/after each use.
  5. Food and drinks are not allowed in the computer lab.

G. SouthArk Library

*“Library users” referenced below refers to SouthArk students, faculty, and staff only, as indicated in item #1.

News Update - December 18, 2020

As of December 18, 2020, South Arkansas Community College continues to track probable close contacts, tests, and positive cases related to COVID-19. This tracking activity is in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) and University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) doctors and contact tracers.

The college currently has zero students in isolation for positive COVID tests.  There is one employee currently isolated due to a positive test.  We also have one student and zero employees in quarantine for close contact with individuals who have tested positive.   Since we began tracking in early August, we have documented 54 total positive cases, including 45 students and nine employees.

The CDC released new guidelines for COVID-19 quarantine earlier this month.  The Arkansas Division of Higher Education (ADHE), the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH), and the University of Arkansas Medical System (UAMS) provided clarity for higher education institutions in the state:

  • The 14-day quarantine is the safest option and is still the recommended length for COVID-19 quarantines.  UAMS must be able to confirm asymptomatic status to release from quarantine.
  • Individuals placed into quarantine as a result of a close contact may be released after 10 days IF they have been asymptomatic throughout the quarantine period.  The individual MUST notify the campus point of contact (POC) and request early release.  The POC will have to verify absence of symptoms with UAMS to grant official release.
  • Individuals placed into quarantine as a result of a close contact may be released after a minimum of seven days IF they 1) have been asymptomatic throughout the quarantine period AND 2) receive a negative COVID-19 test provided the test was taken no sooner than five days after the last exposure.  The individual MUST notify the campus POC and request early release.  The POC will verify absence of symptoms with UAMS to grant official release.

If an individual is allowed early release from the 14-day quarantine, they must adhere strictly to other measures to reduce the spread, to including masking, social distancing, hand hygiene, monitoring symptoms, reduced social activities, etc., thought day 14 of the quarantine period.  If symptoms develop after the early release, the individual should immediately isolate and be tested for COVID-19 even if they previously had a negative test.

Nothing is changed from the minimum 10-day isolation period for a person testing positive for COVID-19.

Any time that a SouthArk student or employee reports symptoms, probable close contact, or being tested, SouthArk follows a strict protocol of tracing and reporting. It is critical that anyone who experiences illness (COVID-like symptoms or otherwise), has close contact with someone who is positive, or is directed to have a COVID-19 test report that immediately to Mr. Carey Tucker (SouthArk Vice President for Finance and Administration) at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 870-864-7147. Students and employees can also reach Mr. Tucker via the This email address is being protected from spambots. In coordination with the ADH, SouthArk students and employees can use the Union County Health Unit at 301 America Road in El Dorado for COVID-19 testing at no cost.  The health unit may be contacted at 870-863-5101.  Just explain you are a SouthArk student or employee and show your SouthArk ID at the health unit.

Please remember to do your part in minimizing the spread of COVID-19:

  • Practice social distancing by putting at least 6 feet between yourself and others, including covering your mouth and nose with a cloth face covering, especially in public places where 6 feet of separation is not feasible.
  • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds and/or use hand sanitizer
  • Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
  • Clean and then disinfect frequently used surfaces
  • Cover coughs/sneezes with a tissue or inside of your elbow
  • Monitor your health for symptoms, and stay home if you're sick

News Update - August 17, 2020

SouthArk Students, Faculty and Staff:

We learned today (8/17/2020) that a South Arkansas Community College employee has tested positive for COVID-19.  That employee was in close contact with a small group of students last week and those students are being notified of the situation.  Per Arkansas Department of Health guidelines, the employee is in isolation and the students are being instructed to self-quarantine effective immediately.

The work area(s) of the employee have been sanitized and disinfected.  Based on our in-house review of the employee’s activities, we do not believe that any other employees or students came into close contact immediately prior to or during the onset of symptoms.

As part of SouthArk’s ongoing communication regarding our response to COVID-19, this information (along with any future notifications regarding campus-based COVID-19 incidents) will be posted to our Campus Health and Safety webpage at https://www.southark.edu/covid-19

With the ongoing COVID-19 cases in our local community and state, we would like to remind you to continue to strengthen your personal health protection:

  • Practice social distancing by putting at least 6 feet between yourself and others, including covering your mouth and nose with a cloth face covering, especially in public places where 6 feet of separation is not feasible
  • Follow Arkansas Department of Health / CDC guidance if symptoms develop

COVID-19 affects all age groups - even college-aged students - and the social distancing guidelines, including wearing face coverings when around others, are to protect yourself and care for others as well.

If you are a SouthArk student or employee and are concerned that you may have been exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19, please contact Mr. Carey Tucker (SouthArk Vice President for Finance and Administration) at This email address is being protected from spambots. What is COVID-19 (Coronavirus)?

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) virus, and we are learning more about it every day. There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. At this point, the best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes it. Stopping transmission (spread) of the virus through everyday practices is the best way to keep people healthy. Learn more about COVID-19.

On February 11, 2020 the World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease that is causing the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak, first identified in Wuhan China. The new name of this disease is coronavirus disease 2019, abbreviated as COVID-19. In COVID-19, ‘CO’ stands for ‘corona,’ ‘VI’ for ‘virus,’ and ‘D’ for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as “2019 novel coronavirus” or “2019-nCoV”.

There are many types of human coronaviruses including some that commonly cause mild upper-respiratory tract illnesses. COVID-19 is a new disease, caused by a novel (or new) coronavirus that has not previously been seen in humans.
