Literary Festival

As many of you know, we postponed the THIRD ANNUAL South Arkansas Literary Festival earlier this year, but rescheduled our fantastic lineup of speakers for THIS SATURDAY, July 18!

The festival will be held virtually, so everyone is able to join and participate from the comfort of your own home! We are excited to be bringing back SouthArk’s own Dr. Jim Yates and Dr. Ken Bridges, as well as Richard Mason, Niki Smith, Dr. James Ulmer, Jake Phillips, and our keynote Kat Robinson! In the late 19th century, the invention of moving pictures fascinated audiences all over the world. Movies soon become entwined with the American popular culture. Arkansans have been involved with the movie industry since the early days. Arkansas’s cast of notables includes actors, writers, directors, cameraman, stuntmen, movie innovators, musicians, and producers. The state’s scenery has played an equally prominent role in many films too. Take a look at some of these Arkansas notables and their contributions to stage, screen, and television.

Why I Love Moby Dick and Why You Should Too: The Relevance of America’s Greatest Novel.

Join Dr. James Yates for a presentation focusing on Herman Melville’s Moby Dick and its artistry, significance, and continuing relevance as a central work in America’s literary canon. Average readers are reluctant at best and fearful at worst to tread into the depths of Melville’s greatest work but this defining American novel beckons reads to its rich mysteries and profundity. Moby Dick is a necessary American novel which still needs to be read and explored. It still speaks to us and our country now more than ever in its themes, characters, symbolism, and spiritual resonance.

Created at a time when the U.S. military was experiencing wholesale reorganization, the USAFSS was a small but powerful intelligence agency created to give the infant Air Force competitive footing in the intelligence community.
