Campus Insights at SouthArk College
Campus Insights at SouthArk College are many. A great South Arkansas Community College, the campus offers many services for students. Knowing what amenities are offered, what the layout is, and how security works is an important bit of information for anyone considering attendance at any institution but especially at college.
Campus Layout
The layout facilitates easy access to campus. Divided into the East Campus and the west campus, both areas have on-duty security and fire safety. The East Campus is where you will find:
- the Industrial Building
- the Welding Building
- the Workforce Development Center
- the Charles A. Hayes Advanced manufacturing Training Center
- the BIlly MCGehee Building
Academics
The academics are vast with Career and Technical education for things like Welding, Mechatronics, Culinary Arts, and Automotive Services. The Health and Science division gives opportunities for Surgical Technicians, Radiologic technicians, phlebotomists, Physical Therapy assistants, occupational therapy assistants, medical coding, or licensed practical nursing. In terms of Arts and Sciences there are opportunities for computer information technology, entrepreneurship, office technology, teacher education programs, accounting, General business, Natural Sciences, or a certificate of General Studies. Continuing education is possible within the community whether you are looking for adult education or corporate education. The sky is literally the limit when it comes to SouthArk College.
Student Services
A big part of school activities and campus insights include access to things like honor societies and organizations on campus. At present the college boasts over a dozen different organizations including the student government Association, the association of radiography students, the Brotherhood of scholarship and service, the competitive shooting club, the criminal justice Club, the Omega Theta Alpha organization, the Phi Beta Lambda organization, and the southark nursing students organization among others. Students are encouraged not just to participate in these organizations where membership is possible but by starting organizations if they are not represented currently.
Students will find a range of events and activities throughout the year not just for college students but for any high school students or the community at large including things like college night, Dollars for Scholars, evening with the Stars, Fall Fest, Hispanic Outreach day, senior day, Spring Fling, the writers ink and awards ceremony, the Student Art Exhibit and sale, as well as the African American Family and Friends Day. Many of these events and activities are designed not only to promote a better Collegiate culture but to offer opportunities for fundraising activities or better awareness.
Students have access to the South Arkansas Arboretum, a place that features a range of Flora and Fauna locally occurring in the West Gulf Coastal Plain area. It's an educational resource available for students as well as visitors that spans 13 acres and provides paved trails for college students to run or walk. There are benches to sit and read amidst the blooming dogwoods or azaleas rather than studying primarily in the library.
Campus Security
Campus security is very detailed. Through the combined efforts of multiple groups and departments, every member on campus can enjoy great safety. The local community is a critical part of this safety with behavioral response teams, safety training programs, Health training programs, and Joint campus safety committees for the East campuses and the West campuses. On the campus you will see uniformed police officers during all hours where the college is operating. Students can easily contact campus security and find uniformed police officers on the west campus or use the red security phones throughout the campus to report any crime, campus incident, or suspicious activity.
These on campus security phones are a recent security feature that have been installed in hallways for different classroom buildings, in the library, and they will automatically route to an on-duty security individual who can facilitate contact directly with campus security. If you need help and you don't necessarily need to report a crime but, for example, you locked your keys in your car, you can still use the security features by directly contacting a uniformed police officer or using the red security phones on campus to get in touch with 24/7 roadside locksmith service. Campus security, especially at night, is there to ensure that students have access to local community services that they need. This is a community-oriented form of safety that works hard to solve problems and liaise with not only the different campuses but different local departments in the community to promote better safety for all students and this includes access to locksmith services when they are necessary.
